an introduction by Professor Jacques Mestre, The Director of the Centre for Economic Law

Welcome to the Aix-Marseille Centre for Economic Law !

The Aix-Marseille Centre for Economic Law was established 25 years ago as a research centre within the Paul Cezanne University of Aix-Marseille. It exists to promote the study of all aspects of economic and business law and other related areas and works in close collaboration with professionals and businesses from the South of France.

The Centre has operated for many years with the recognition and active support of the French Ministry for Higher Education and Research, and obtained the "statut d'équipe d'accueil" (EA 900). Currently about 140 students (a fifty of whom come from overseas universities such as Lebanon, Thailand, West Africa, China, Hungary, Chile, Vietnam...) prepare their theses at the Centre, some within the framework of the CIFRE conventions (which consist of a trilateral cooperation between a doctoral student, a business and a research centre), others with ministerial or regional study grants.

Our young researchers work on varied topics ranging from contract law to employment law, company law, competition law and financial law, IP rights, sports law, environmental law, banking law, etc. Each year about ten doctoral theses are submitted ans defended at the Centre. By way of example, the most recent theses discussed topics such as the "Leniency in comparative competition law", "The national and international determination of the applicable law to contrats", "The 'liberal practice' contract of physicians", "Legal integration in the West African Economic and Monetary Union", "The impact of private law on politics", "The constitutional documents of commercial companies", "The influence of the parties over the powers of the judge", "Employee protection and rescue plans for companies", "Environmental risk management of a graded industrial plant under insolvency proceedings", "The commercial agent in France and in the Middle East".

Furthermore, the Centre also functions as a support structure for the approximately 60 students per year who study for the research masters degree in either business law or IP law at the Aix-Marseille Institute of Business Law.

Finally, the Centre for Economic Law regularly organises conferences in collaboration with professionals and, more and more frequently, with universities from abroad. The most recent events in 2007-2008 included conferences and seminars on the following topics : The law of cosmetics ans perfumes, The contract of transfer of sportsmen, Conventions on environmental risk management, First assessment of the application of the Law on corporate rescue mechanisms, Recent developments in design law and model law, and the French-Swiss cross talk conference on contractual practices which was organised in collaboration  with the Swiss Institute of Comparative Law (Lausanne). The papers given at these conferences are usually published by the University Press of Aix-Marseille, as are many of the doctoral theses defended at the Centre.

For further information about the activities of the Centre for Economic Law, its publications, resources and materials, or to work with its members on various topics which may be of interest to you, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.
